Unit I
Mechanics: Physical quantities, Scalars and vectors, Vector algebra, Coordinate systems, Reference frames, Newton’s laws of motion, Equations of motion, Motion in one and two dimensions, Projectile motion, Circular motion, Applications of Newton’s laws. Forces in nature, Frictional forces, Constraints and constraint forces, Motion in polar coordinates, Introduction to cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems.

Unit II
Work, Energy and Momentum: Work done by a force, Kinetic and potential energy, Conservative and non-conservative forces, Potential energy functions, Relation between force and potential energy, Equipotential surfaces, Conservation of mechanical energy. Linear momentum and impulse, Conservation of momentum, Angular momentum and torque, Conservation of angular momentum. Central forces, Planetary motion, Kepler’s laws, Satellite motion and basic orbital applications.

Unit III
Oscillations: Simple harmonic motion, Differential equation of harmonic oscillator, Energy of harmonic oscillator, Mechanical oscillators, Examples of oscillatory systems. Damped oscillations, Over-damped, critically damped and under-damped systems, Forced oscillations, Resonance, Quality factor, Engineering applications of vibration and resonance. Non-inertial reference frames, Rotating frames, Centripetal and Coriolis forces, Applications of Coriolis effect.

Unit IV
Rigid Body Dynamics: Centre of mass, Motion of rigid bodies, Translational and rotational motion, Moment of inertia, Radius of gyration, Parallel and perpendicular axis theorems. Torque, Angular momentum, Rotational kinetic energy, Rolling motion, Gyroscopic effects, Introduction to three-dimensional rigid body motion and engineering applications.
